Not really a blog post tonight, but just some info I thought I’d pass along to those that read. If you are playing WAR and want all of the info you need for the current “Witching Night” live event, then the following link is for you.

Click Here to head on over to Massively’s guide to Warhammer’s Witching Night.

Everything you need to know, all in one place. I look forward to being able to really delve into the event tomorrow night.

Heavy Metal!

In an attempt to combat the launch of Wrath of the Lich King, Mythic has pulled a rabbit out of a hat. An in game event, entitled Heavy Metal, will start on November 17th and will end with the arrival of the Knight of the Blazing Sun and the Black Guard classes into the lands of Warhammer.

The coolest part of the event? You can play the classes a week early if you complete a daily Tome of Knowledge Unlock that will be unveiled during the event. Damn, I’m starting to sound like a fanboy.

My biggest problem? I still play both games, and definitely don’t want to be struggling to decide which to focus on. This was a smart marketing move by Mythic. While I don’t think that WoW will actually be hurt by it, but I think some will think twice about picking up WotLK right away and may wait a month. What do you think?

I Agree…

Tobold made this post yesterday, and I have to say, it speaks loads of truth.

I logged into WoW last night, right into a horde of Zombies in Shattrath. Soon enough, I was one. When I finally died (I should say, blew myself up by accident) I decided to make a break for the flight master. Well, guess what…he was dead.

Now, I could have spent time complaining, but I didn’t. I took a step back and realized how unique an event Blizzard had created. It reminded me of some of the old Game Events in Everquest, like “The War” from a couple of years ago. To me, it is a great idea. Sure, it inconveniences you a bit, but if you take it for what it is — lore– then you can really get into the story.

Others didn’t see it as I did. There was constant complaining. It was in every channel in game. People just wouldn’t stop crying about it. The WoW Forums were overrun as well. Some people loved it, but most hated it.

My advice to those that can’t shut up and stop complaining: Get over it! Stop the “woe is me” and learn to actually get into the game a bit. You are NOT the only person playing the game, and the developers put in the event as a story arc, not as a personal attack against you.

But, as Tobold says, this is why WAR will never have 10 million subscribers. While I hope we’re both wrong with that statement, I don’t think we are. PvP is a major turn off for some people (particularly the losers). With WAR being such a PvP-centric game, where you have the potential to be kicked out of your city for DAYS, some of these WoW QQers would never last. Most people don’t have the patience to wait 3 minutes for a respawn on the Flight Master or trainers, imagine not being able to access your home city for a week. They would simply keel over and die.

It seems that it wasn’t only my week that was busy. There has been a ton of news to hit the blogosphere and the MMO News sites in the past few days. No, I’m not going into everything. That would just be an unruly post. But there are a couple I would like to highlight.

First, and probably the biggest story of the week, is the official announcement of Star Wars: The Old Republic. I wrote about my thoughts on this a few posts ago, but now that I have some details, I have to say that I’m more interested now than ever. There are a few things that concern me though.

While I’m excited to check out the game (as I am with anything Star Wars related), the few details that LucasArts gives about the gameplay make me wonder how much replay value the game will have. It sounds so far like it will be a story driven game that has an ending, you just play it with other people. They even mentioned about playing the game from beginning to end as a Jedi and then again as a Sith and having completely different story lines. Well, that’s great and all, but if the game has an ending, how long are people going to keep paying you so they can keep playing? I for one know that I would play it once for each, and then probably cancel my subscription until they released an expansion so I could continue the stories. I would feel no draw to continue logging in with out actually advancing my characters in some way, shape, or form.

The second biggest story in my eyes this week, was the story of the woman who logged into her “Husband’s” Maple Story account, and killed his character off because he divorced her…in game. Yes, that’s right, they’re not married in real life. They were married in Maple Story and he divorced her avatar. Not only that, but she became so made at the virtual divorce, that she logged into game, killed off his character, and, get this, is going to jail for it! And no, she’s not going to jail for “murder”, she’s going to jail for hacking his account. While I can see them taking action against her Maple Story account, I can’t believe that the authorites would get involved in such a petty dispute, especially over virtual goods. It worries me more and more about how much “big brother” is going to start cracking down on other in-game occurances. I’m not saying that what she did was right, because it’s not, but does she really deserve 5 years in jail? I don’t think so.

And finally, I’ve continued on my Warhammer crusade. The more I play the game, and learn about it, the more fun I find it to be. I will be joining my first guild tomorrow as well. It is a guild that will be started at 7pm CST at the Flight Master in Altdorf, on the Phoenix Throne Server. The guild leaders will be Sister Julie and Sister Fran from the No Prisoners, No Mercy Podcast. If anyone else is playing on the PT Server, Order Side, feel free to come and join us tomorrow night for the start of what I’m expecting to be an amazing guild, and group of fellow gamers.

Also, even though I mentioned them a few lines ago, I want to give a shout out to Sister Julie and Sister Fran for putting out, what I consider to be, one of the best Podcasts on the internet. Much love for the show ladies! It was listening to the first couple episodes of that show that inspired me to actually start writing more seriously and to get off my chest what it is that I have to say about our world of MMOs.

Anyway, I plan on trying to keep this blog a little more up to date. I was doing good with every other day for a while, but I’ve been slacking lately. Bad Jmo!

WAR, Two Days Later

Posted in Gaming, MMORPG, WAR with tags , , on 10/19/2008 by Jeremy (Jmo)

I’ve had two days now to start to get the know Warhammer Online, and I must say, I am enjoying it. It is a nice break away from WoW. I took some time to learn a couple of the classes and have been switching between my Bright Wizard and my White Lion. Both are a ton of fun. I still want to try out a Dwarf Ironbreaker and a Swordmaster, but I think I’m going to focus on the Bright Wizard as my main for now. The White Lion seems to be a lot more sturdy of a PvP choice though.

Overall the questing is what I came to expect. PvE isn’t much different than WoW, but I do like how the game has a built in “QuestHelper” of sorts that gives you the general vicinity of the quests. It’s nice being able to know right where to go without having to install any addons. The graphics are good too, although, I wish there were more options as I do get a bit of graphic lag every now and then. And the public quests are great. It’s an aspect that actually sets WAR above most of the others. Public quests pretty much force you to group and get to know your fellow gamers, which is an aspect I haven’t really seen in a game since Everquest. You could level up a character entirely solo if you’d like, but you do not have to, and it is encouraged that you group. Mythic even included an Open Party system to help with this.

RvR is a blast. While I was playing EQ, I had a few friends who were into DAoC and tried to explain RvR to me, but I never really got it. At the time, I had never played a game with good PvP. Now, about 8 years later, I get it. I must say that Mythic hit the nail on the head with their PvP system. It’s more about a goal instead of just grinding for gear.

There are a couple of negatives I have to put out there though. Firstly, the bugs. There’s not a lot (and my hats off to Mythic for one of the smoothest launches in gaming history). But I’ve been hit by the CTD bug a handful of times now. It’s just annoying waiting for the game to exit when this happens. For some reason (and this may be another bug) it takes at least 3-4 minutes of my computer freezing to actually exit the game. Another problem (and this is just more of an annoyance than anything), is that I, as an Order character, have not won a single Scenario. I don’t know if it’s just bad luck, but I’ve probably done at least 20 so far and I have lost every single one. Part of this is that Black Orcs seem to be vastly overpowered…so much so that it was what most of the Scenario Chat is about. I was getting rather sick of seeing people complaining about it instead of just teaming up and taking one down. I do hope, though, that this is something that plan on fixing at least a little bit. It shouldn’t take a whole group to take down a Black Orc when the Order side doesn’t have an equivalent class (that I’ve seen or heard of).

Overall though, WAR is fun. It may not be a WoW killer, but it is a nice alternative to the norm. If anyone else plays on Phoenix Throne, Order side, let me know.

Going to WAR

So, I’ve done it. I’ve broken out of my current WoW shell. Having played EQ for almost 10 years and the whole time stating I would never go anywhere else, I jumped aboard the WoW bandwagon with some RL friends and WoW guildies. And it’s time for me to make a leap again. I’m going to WAR! Thanks to some insight by Sister Julie and Sister Fran at the No Prisoners, No Mercy Podcast, I’m giving a Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning a shot.

No, I’m not leaving WoW, not by a long shot (and I recently got into the first round of Stargate Worlds beta, but I can’t talk about it yet. =p). I want to give WAR the benefit of the doubt. I’ve been skeptical that it is just a WoW Knockoff, but it does intrigue me and has received tons of positive reviews. I look forward to reviewing it myself, when the time comes.

Wrath of the Lich King is just over the horizon, and the “Echoes of Doom” can be heard throughout Azeroth; it’s denizens waiting eagerly in anticipation to board the transports to the new lands of Northrend.

The time is almost here, and Blizzard has sprung the first major content change of many at us. Whether you were ready for it or not, it is here. This patch included a slew of class changes which has torn up the communty. I for one like what they’ve done.

They’ve made many long past due changes to most of the classes. Blizzard also introduced the new achievement system, which keeps track of different milestones in the game. While this is not a new development in the gaming world, it is a fun little addition to WoW. The pet and mount changes were also needed. It saves tons of bag space not having to haul around mounts and vanity pets…yes…I’m a pet whore too!

For the bad news though, most of the Addons are broken. I never really realized how many custom addons I used until I tried to log into the game, only to find a very empty screen. I’ve always been a custom UI whore, even in EverQuest. I could never be satisfied with the norm. Who knows what nifty new addons that WotLK will bring.

What do you think of the newest patch and the soon to be released WotLK?
